Directory of mineral producers in Maryland - 1995

Introduction

This directory provides an up-to-date listing of all active mineral producers in Maryland, and includes a total of 225 companies and individuals operating at 374 sites. Companies which import mineral commodities from out-of-state for processing or resale in Maryland were not included. The Maryland Geological Survey has endeavored to make this directory as accurate as possible by contacting all mineral producers in the State by questionnaire or by phone.

The total value of mineral production in Maryland (Figure 1) was $442 million in 1993, the latest year for which complete figures are available. This is a decline from the record high of $551 million reached in 1990. Production of aggregate materials in Maryland (Figure 2) shows that sand and gravel reached an all-time high of nearly 20 million tons in 1987, but has since dropped to around 12 million tons. Crushed stone production has also decreased to around 26 million tons from a 1988 high of 33 million tons. A significant amount of limestone reported as crushed stone aggregate goes into the production of Portland cement. Coal production has stabilized at about 3.5 million tons since the peak of 4.4 million tons reached in 1981.

The mineral producers in this directory are listed by county and are further catalogued by product. The name and mailing address of each producer, the location of the mineral-producing operation, and the product are given. Reference numbers for the individual mining operations are keyed to a location map for each county. Two cross indices are included: one lists the mineral commodities and the counties from which they are produced; the other is an alphabetical listing of mineral producers.

Any omissions or corrections to this directory should be brought to the attention of the Maryland Geological Survey for incorporation into future editions.
